Frequently Asked Questions
Attendance
-
No. We will arrange accommodation for all confirmed attendees for the duration of the event.
-
While none of the following is mandatory, you might find the below packing list useful:
comfortable and warm clothes: there is no ‘dress code’ for the residential – so please bring what you feel comfortable in. We recommend packing a jumper or jacket as it can get quite chilly in Dorking, especially at night.
comfortable shoes: the venue is surrounded by extensive grounds, which can get muddy if it’s been raining. The venue offers about 20 wellies for guests at no-cost, but given the number of attendees, we recommend that you bring some comfortable shoes you don’t mind getting muddy.
swimming costumes/gym clothes: the venue has a pool, jacuzzi, fully equipped gym and offers yoga, pilates, etc. So do bring appropriate clothing and gear if you would like to use the leisure facilities.
umbrella: while we are hoping for sunshine, we can never be too sure. We recommend that you bring an umbrella to enjoy the outdoors even if it’s raining.
medication: the venue is a 15-min drive from the nearest town. Please bring your medication(s) for your stay as getting to the pharmacy can take some time.
chargers and adapters: if you are travelling from a region that uses a different power socket than the UK, don’t forget to bring you adapters!
The venue provides basic toiletries (e.g. shampoo, conditioner and body wash). Hair dryers are also available to guests.

We offer a range of accommodations to ensure attendees are able to fully participate during the event.
This may include fully accessible rooms, ground floor access, quieter rooms, hearing loop, childcare support, interpretation, etc.
Please request your accessibility accommodations in your registration form. We will contact you to discuss those and agree any associated additional expenses.
If you have not requested accessibility support but would like to, please email migrationresidential@phf.org.uk as soon as possible.
-
No. We are only able to accommodate one person per organisation.
-
If you are no longer able to join us, please email migrationresidential@phf.org.uk as soon as possible.
If a colleague is interested in joining in your place, please connect us to them to arrange their registration. Otherwise, we will offer the spot to someone in our waiting list.
-
Attendance at the Migration Residential is usually a mix of grant holders and representatives of other organisations who work on migration and related fields, as well as 3-6 funders.
We are expecting 120-130 attendees this year. Attendee bios, photo, and contact details will be available to help you connect during and after the event.
While we are happy to facilitate introductions to other funders, please remember the primary purpose of the residential is not fundraising. So please consider this while engaging with others during the event.
Travel
-
Please wait until we confirm your registration before booking your travel. Following the residential, you will be able to claim relevant expenses, as per our expenses policy. If you would rather drive, there is free parking at the premise and we are able to cover mileage-related expenses, as per our expenses policy.
-
To support your attendance, you may claim:
from London and the South East: up to £50 for travel incurred to attend the Migration Residential.
from all other regions: up to £200 for travel incurred to attend the Migration Residential.
These rates apply to all forms of transportation, including private cars.
If you require additional travel support, please agree this with our team before booking your travel by us at migrationresidential@phf.org.uk.
-
The venue is a short drive from the train station, however the walk is long. We are organising shuttles to pick up participants at the train station on Wednesday and drop off on Friday.
If you would like to use this service, please let us know in your registration form and we will get in touch with more details.
-
If shuttles are not available when you arrive/leave you can arrange your own travel using any of these local taxi providers:
Dorking Taxis: 01306885533
Star Taxi: 01306 882299
Gill Taxi: 07919053419
-
We encourage attendees to use public transportation. But we know that this is not suitable for everyone, including due to accessibility requirements.
If you would prefer to drive to the venue, they offer free parking spaces for those staying overnight or participating in the event. There are 200 parking spots available and no registration is required before arrival.
Please check our expenses policy for more information about car travel reimbursement.
-
We have opted for a venue that met attendees' request for more green and outdoor space, while also being accessible by public transportation. But we know this may not be the case for everyone depending on connections or availability in your area.
If you are unable to find suitable transport options from where you are located, please email us at migrationresidential@phf.org.uk to discuss alternatives to support your attendance.
